Bespoke Ledged and Braced Doors

G S Haydon manufactures bespoke ledged and braced doors for cottages, farmhouses, barn conversions, period properties and traditional interiors across Devon.

Each door is made to measure in our South Molton workshop, allowing the plank widths, proportions, ledges, braces, timber and ironmongery to be selected to suit the property.

These traditional boarded doors are particularly useful in older buildings where openings are rarely standard sizes and a mass-produced door can look out of place.

Traditional Cottage Doors Made to Measure

Ledged and braced doors are constructed from vertical timber boards held together by horizontal ledges, with diagonal braces providing additional support.

Their simple construction has been used in British buildings for generations and remains particularly well suited to cottages, farmhouses and other character properties.

Because we manufacture each door individually, we can adapt the dimensions and detailing to the opening rather than cutting down a standard door.

Oak Ledged and Braced Doors

Oak is a popular choice where the natural colour, grain and texture of the timber are intended to remain visible.

An oak ledged and braced door can work particularly well in cottages, barn conversions and traditional interiors where a natural timber finish complements stone, lime plaster or exposed beams.

Timber selection is important because boarded doors naturally respond to changes in temperature and humidity. We use suitable joinery-grade timber and will advise on the construction and finish appropriate to the proposed location.

Painted doors can also be manufactured from other timbers where a natural oak finish is not required.

Internal and External Ledged and Braced Doors

Ledged and braced construction is commonly used for internal cottage doors, cupboards, utility rooms and other traditional openings.

For external locations, the construction needs to be considered more carefully because the door will be exposed to changes in temperature and moisture. Depending on the opening and level of exposure, a framed, ledged and braced construction or another external door design may provide a more appropriate solution.

We will advise on the construction that best suits the location rather than using the same design for every opening.

Traditional Ironmongery and Finishing

The choice of ironmongery has a significant effect on the finished appearance of a cottage door.

Options can include traditional T-hinges, thumb latches and other simple fittings in finishes that complement the timber and surrounding property.

Doors can be supplied ready for the agreed paint, stain or oil treatment, depending on the timber and intended use.

Small details such as hinge length, latch position, plank widths and brace proportions can make a noticeable difference to whether the finished door looks natural within an older property.

All of our ledged and braced doors are manufactured to order in our own workshop rather than bought in as standard door blanks.

This enables us to make doors for unusual openings and to reproduce the proportions and character of existing joinery where required.

Where an existing traditional door is damaged but capable of being retained, our joinery repair and refurbishment service may also be worth considering.
