Home Libraries, Studies & Fitted Bookcases

Some rooms become the heart of a home.

For many of our clients, a bespoke home library is far more than somewhere to store books. It's a place to read, think, work quietly or simply close the door and escape the pace of everyday life.

One client summed it up perfectly after we completed their library. They told us they loved coming into the room, closing the door and simply enjoying the space whenever the world became a little overwhelming.

That, to us, is the true measure of a successful project.

At GS Haydon & Son, we design, manufacture and install bespoke home libraries, studies and fitted bookcases from our workshop in South Molton. Every project is individually designed to complement both the character of the property and the way our clients want to live within it.

Whether you own a Victorian townhouse, a Georgian country house, a listed cottage or a modern home, our aim is always the same: to create joinery that feels as though it has always belonged.

Designed Around Your Home

Every room tells a different story.

Rather than beginning with a standard design, we begin by understanding the room itself. Ceiling heights, skirting boards, cornices, fireplaces, natural light and the collections that will eventually fill the shelves all influence the finished design.

Sometimes a room calls for traditional mouldings and decorative cornices. Sometimes simple contemporary lines are the better choice.

Our role is not to impose a style, but to design furniture that sits comfortably within the architecture of your home.

One principle guides many of our projects:

Sometimes good design comes from knowing when to stop.

Rather than filling every available inch with shelving, carefully considered proportions often create a calmer, more elegant room that you'll continue to enjoy for many years.

From Conversation to Finished Room

Every bespoke project begins with a conversation.

We take time to understand how you'd like to use the room, whether you're creating a traditional library, a home office, a reading room or simply beautiful fitted storage.

Depending on the project, this process may include:

  • Initial consultation and site survey.
  • Hand drawings or CAD drawings.
  • Material recommendations.
  • Paint colour advice.
  • Full-size representative mock-ups where appropriate.
  • Manufacture in our South Molton workshop.
  • Professional installation by our own team.

Our aim is always to narrow the gap between what you imagine and what you eventually receive.

Choosing the Right Materials

Every material is selected because it suits the project.

For painted libraries we often recommend tulipwood for the visible joinery. It produces crisp mouldings, is durable for everyday use and contains fewer natural defects than many softwoods.

Where appropriate we may recommend moisture-resistant MDF for concealed painted components such as cabinet backs or internal panels. Far from being a shortcut, this provides excellent stability and allows us to invest your budget where it will be seen and appreciated most.

If you would prefer every component to be made from solid timber, we are always happy to discuss this.

Our recommendations are based on experience, practicality and long-term performance rather than simply choosing the most expensive option.

Handcrafted in South Molton

Every home library and fitted bookcase is made by our own team in South Molton.

Over many years we have built an extensive collection of traditional cutter profiles, allowing us to create mouldings that complement both period and contemporary interiors.

Features such as adjustable shelving, traditional scratch bead details, moulded cornices, plinths and hidden storage can all be incorporated where appropriate.

Every project is individually made rather than selected from a catalogue.

How Much Does a Bespoke Home Library Cost?

Every room is different, so it's impossible to give an exact price without discussing your project.

However, we appreciate that having a realistic guide is helpful.

As an indication:

  • Small fitted bookcases often start from around £2,000–£3,000.
  • Larger painted library walls are commonly £5,000–£10,000.
  • Complete room libraries with cupboards, decorative mouldings and specialist finishes can exceed £15,000, depending on their size and complexity.

Following an initial conversation, we're always happy to provide honest guidance about what is achievable within your budget. Our aim is never to sell you more than you need, but to help you create a room you'll continue to enjoy for many years.

Recent Home Library Project

We recently completed a bespoke painted home library for a Victorian property on the Devon coast, carefully designing the joinery around the original architectural features of the room. From representative mock-ups to handcrafted mouldings and a spray-applied finish in Little Greene "Pea Green 91", every detail was considered to create a room that felt as though it had always belonged.

You can read the full case study to see how the project developed from the first conversation through to the finished library.

Let's Discuss Your Project

Whether you're planning a complete home library, fitted bookcases, a study or bespoke interior joinery, we'd be delighted to hear about your ideas.

Every project begins with a conversation. We'll listen carefully, offer honest advice and work with you to create joinery that complements your home, your lifestyle and the way you want to use the space.
