Lift and Slide Wood Doors

Bespoke Wooden Lift and Slide Doors

G S Haydon manufactures bespoke wooden lift and slide doors for extensions, renovations and individual homes where large areas of glazing and uninterrupted views are important.

Made to measure in our South Molton workshop, these large timber sliding doors are particularly suited to wide openings overlooking gardens, countryside or coastal views.

Each system can be designed around the size of the opening, required timber, glazing and finish, with supply-only and professional installation options available.

What Are Lift and Slide Doors?

Lift and slide doors use specialist hardware that slightly raises the moving door panel when the handle is operated.

Once lifted away from its weather seals, the large glazed panel can slide smoothly along its track. Turning the handle again lowers the door back into position, creating a secure and weather-resistant seal.

This mechanism allows much larger and heavier glazed panels to be operated comfortably than would normally be practical with a conventional sliding door.

Lift and Slide or Bi-Fold Doors?

Both systems can create a wide glazed opening, but they work differently.

A lift and slide system usually has fewer vertical frame sections when closed, which can provide a clearer view through the glass. One or more panels slide behind another, so part of the opening remains occupied when the doors are fully open.

Timber bi-fold doors, by comparison, fold into a stack and can open up a greater proportion of the overall doorway.

The right choice therefore depends on whether the priority is the clearest possible view when the doors are closed or the widest possible opening when they are open.

Made-to-Measure Timber Sliding Doors

Large glazed door systems need accurate manufacture because the timber, glass and hardware all work together.

Every lift and slide door we produce is made specifically for the project rather than adapted from a standard size.

Options can include:

  • Different panel configurations
  • Large double-glazed units
  • Painted or natural timber finishes
  • Different colours internally and externally
  • Modern weather seals
  • Secure locking systems
  • Specialist lift-and-slide tracks and hardware

The detailing is generally kept clean and simple to make the most of the large glazed areas.

Accoya and Hardwood Options

Large sliding doors place particular demands on the timber because the panels need to remain stable and accurately aligned.

Accoya is well suited to this type of external joinery because of its dimensional stability and resistance to decay.

Suitable durable hardwoods can also be used where their appearance or other characteristics suit the project.

Our guide to Accoya for timber doors and windows explains why we use it for many demanding external joinery projects.

Factory Finished in South Molton

We recommend fully finishing lift and slide doors before they are installed.

The timber can be prepared, painted or stained and glazed under controlled conditions in our South Molton workshop, providing protection before the completed doors are exposed to the weather.

We can supply the finished doors for installation by your contractor or provide surveying and professional installation for suitable projects within our working area.
