Stable Doors for Houses Made in Devon
Bespoke Wooden Stable Doors Made in Devon
G S Haydon manufactures bespoke wooden stable doors for cottages, period properties, renovations and individual homes across Devon.
Made to measure in our South Molton workshop, each stable door can be designed around the property, with the timber, glazing, ironmongery and finish selected specifically for the project.
Stable doors work particularly well as kitchen, utility, back and porch doors, allowing the upper section to open independently while the lower section remains closed.
We offer both supply-only doors and a complete survey, manufacture and professional installation service.
Made-to-Measure External Stable Doors
Every stable door we manufacture is made individually rather than selected from a standard range of sizes.
This makes them particularly suitable for older properties and non-standard openings, where the proportions and detailing of the new door need to work with the surrounding building.
Options can include:
- Solid timber or glazed upper sections
- Traditional or contemporary panel designs
- Oak, Accoya and durable hardwoods
- Double or heritage glazing
- Traditional or modern ironmongery
- Multipoint locking systems
- Painted, stained or natural timber finishes
- Cat or dog flaps incorporated during manufacture
For other front, back and external door styles, see our range of bespoke timber doors.
Glazed Stable Doors
Adding glass to the upper section can bring considerably more natural light into a kitchen, hallway or utility room while retaining the practical split-door arrangement.
Glazing options can include modern energy-efficient double glazing, decorative or obscure glass and slimmer heritage units where finer proportions are appropriate.
For period properties, our slim heritage double glazing provides another option where traditional appearance is particularly important.
The size and arrangement of the glass can be designed around the style of the property rather than using a fixed standard pattern.
Oak, Accoya and Hardwood Stable Doors
The most suitable timber depends on the required appearance, finish and exposure of the doorway.
European Oak is particularly effective where the natural colour and grain of the timber form part of the finished design.
Accoya is a popular option for painted external stable doors because of its dimensional stability and resistance to decay. This stability is especially useful in a two-part external door where accurate alignment between the upper and lower sections is important.
Suitable durable hardwoods can also be used for painted or stained doors.
Our guide to Accoya for external timber joinery explains where we believe its additional cost can be worthwhile.
Security and Ironmongery
A well-designed stable door can incorporate modern security while retaining traditional character.
Depending on the design, we can use mortice locks, deadlocks or multipoint locking systems alongside suitable hinges and security glazing.
Ironmongery can be selected to suit the property, from traditional black or brass fittings to simpler contemporary finishes.
Where the stable door is being used as a main entrance, we will take its location and security requirements into account when agreeing the specification.
Factory Finished in South Molton
We generally recommend factory finishing for external timber doors.
Painting or staining the door in our workshop allows the timber, edges and glazing rebates to be properly prepared and coated before installation.
We use professional exterior coating systems and can provide a wide range of colours, including different internal and external finishes where required.
Repair or Replace an Existing Stable Door?
Timber doors can often be repaired when deterioration is limited to particular areas.
If an existing stable door has localised decay, damaged components or problems with its ironmongery, our joinery repair and refurbishment service may be worth considering before complete replacement.
Where replacement is the more appropriate option, we can reproduce the proportions and character of the existing door or develop a new design to suit the property.

"A pleasure to deal with. Haydons supplied and installed a bespoke stable-style front door for us. They were so easy to deal with: communication with the office was great; adjustments were made exactly to our spec; staff were courteous and friendly; and the job was done beautifully. I'd recommend this firm.
