Bespoke Office Furniture and Fitted Workspaces

A good workspace needs to make the most of the room without feeling dominated by furniture.

G S Haydon designs and manufactures bespoke office furniture and fitted joinery for home studies, commercial offices and reception areas. Everything is made to order in our South Molton workshop, allowing the layout, storage, materials and finish to be developed around the space.

Projects can range from a fitted desk and shelving in a home office to reception counters, storage walls and one-off furniture for commercial premises.

Home Offices Designed Around the Space

Working from home often means fitting a productive workspace into a room that needs to serve more than one purpose.

Bespoke furniture allows desks, shelving and storage to be designed around windows, alcoves, sloping ceilings and other features that standard office furniture can struggle to accommodate.

A home office might include:

  • Made-to-measure desks
  • Fitted shelving
  • Filing and document storage
  • Concealed cupboards
  • Printer and equipment storage
  • Cable management
  • Display shelving
  • Window seats or reading areas
  • Furniture designed around awkward alcoves

The aim is to create a workspace that functions properly during the working day while still feeling like part of the home.

For studies where books and display shelving are a major part of the room, our bespoke home libraries offer further possibilities.

Reception Desks and Commercial Office Joinery

Commercial spaces place different demands on furniture.

Reception counters, storage and workstations need to cope with daily use while also contributing to the first impression visitors have of the business.

We have produced curved reception desks, bespoke storage and other individual pieces for commercial interiors, with each item manufactured to suit the available space and its intended use.

Projects can include:

  • Reception desks and counters
  • Fitted office storage
  • Shelving and display furniture
  • Cupboards and filing systems
  • Desks and workstations
  • Individual furniture for meeting and reception areas

We focus on the joinery and furniture itself rather than offering a generic office-furniture package, which means unusual dimensions, specific materials and one-off designs can all be considered.

Storage That Works Harder

Storage is often where bespoke office furniture makes the greatest difference.

Full-height cupboards can use otherwise wasted wall space, while open shelving can be combined with concealed storage to keep everyday equipment accessible without leaving everything on display.

Drawers, adjustable shelves and equipment spaces can all be sized around what actually needs to be stored rather than predetermined cabinet dimensions.

This can be particularly useful in smaller studies and offices where every part of the room needs to earn its space.

Materials and Finishes

Office furniture does not need to be made entirely from expensive solid timber to be well made.

Natural Oak and other hardwoods can be used where the grain and character of the timber are intended to remain visible.

For painted furniture, Tulipwood can be an excellent choice for doors, frames and detailed components, while high-quality plywood, MDF and other stable board materials may be more appropriate for cabinet interiors and concealed elements.

Laminates and other durable surfaces can also have a place in commercial furniture where ease of maintenance and resistance to daily wear are important.

The material specification is developed around how the furniture will be used and how it needs to look, rather than applying the same construction to every project.

From Initial Layout to Installation

A project can begin with a room plan, architectural drawings, photographs or simply an idea of what currently does not work.

We can then develop the layout, materials, storage and detailing before manufacture begins.

The furniture is made in our South Molton workshop and can be supplied for installation by others or fitted by our own team where appropriate.

Where a wider renovation also requires doors or matching interior joinery, we can manufacture bespoke internal timber doors alongside the fitted furniture.
