Stormproof Windows

Bespoke Timber Stormproof Windows in Devon

G S Haydon manufactures bespoke timber stormproof windows for homes, renovations and individual building projects across Devon.

Made to measure in our South Molton workshop, stormproof casement windows are particularly well suited to exposed locations where good weather resistance is an important consideration.

Our windows can combine durable timbers, modern double glazing, effective weather seals and secure ironmongery with a factory-painted or stained finish.

They are available supply only or with surveying and professional installation.

What Is a Stormproof Casement Window?

In timber joinery, a stormproof window is a casement design where the opening section overlaps the outside face of the surrounding frame when closed.

This overlapping detail helps protect the joint between the opening casement and frame from wind-driven rain and gives the window its distinctive appearance.

Stormproof windows are often chosen for exposed rural and coastal properties, renovations and more contemporary homes.

For properties where a traditional flush appearance is more appropriate, our flush timber casement windows provide an alternative design.

Stormproof Windows Made to Measure

Every window is manufactured individually, allowing its proportions and configuration to be designed around the property rather than a standard range of sizes.

Options can include:

  • Side-hung and top-hung opening casements
  • Fixed lights
  • Different frame and mullion arrangements
  • Multipoint locking systems
  • Friction stays or traditional hinges
  • Modern draught and weather seals
  • Factory-painted or stained finishes
  • Different internal and external colours

We can work from our own site measurements, existing window details or drawings provided by an architect or builder.

Timber Choices for Exposed Locations

Material selection is particularly important where windows are regularly exposed to wind and rain.

We commonly recommend Accoya or a suitable durable hardwood for external stormproof windows.

Accoya offers excellent dimensional stability, which is useful for opening casements and painted external joinery where movement in the timber can affect both operation and finish.

Our guide to Accoya for windows and external joinery explains where we believe the additional material cost can be worthwhile.

The final timber specification will depend on the required finish, exposure, appearance and budget of the project.

Double Glazing and Weather Performance

Stormproof casement windows are particularly suited to modern double glazing because the overlapping window design allows generous timber and glazing sections to be incorporated without compromising the basic style.

Depending on the project, glazing can include low-emissivity glass, warm-edge spacer bars and argon-filled sealed units.

A recent timber window upgrade near Rackenford involved existing stormproof casements being upgraded to modern 20mm double-glazed units while retaining the overall appearance of the windows.

Effective glazing works alongside weather seals, carefully fitted casements and appropriate ironmongery to provide a complete window system.

Factory Finished in South Molton

We generally recommend that external timber windows are fully finished before installation.

Our stormproof windows can be prepared, painted or stained and glazed in our South Molton workshop before delivery. Completing this work under controlled conditions provides protection to the timber before it is exposed to the weather.

Windows can be finished in a wide range of colours, including different internal and external finishes where required.

Supply Only or Professionally Installed

Stormproof windows are available on a supply-only basis for installation by your own builder or contractor.

For projects within our installation area, we can also provide surveying, manufacture, finishing and installation as one complete service.

Qualifying installations can be completed through our CERTASS-registered window installation service, providing the appropriate Building Regulations certification where applicable.
