Bespoke Timber Structures

Some joinery projects fall outside the usual categories of windows, doors and furniture.

G S Haydon designs and manufactures bespoke timber structures for homes and individual properties, from traditional oak framing and conservatory joinery to balconies, arbours and one-off architectural features.

These projects are made to order in our South Molton workshop, allowing the dimensions, timber, construction and detailing to be developed around the building and its intended use.

Oak and Structural Timber Joinery

Larger timber structures require a different approach from ordinary fitted joinery.

The size of the sections, structural loads, exposure to the weather and methods used to connect the individual components all need to be considered from the beginning.

Depending on the project, our work can include:

  • Oak framing
  • Timber porches
  • Balconies and balustrades
  • Garden arbours and entrance structures
  • Conservatory joinery
  • Large glazed timber structures
  • Bespoke architectural timberwork

Traditional mortice-and-tenon construction can be used where appropriate, alongside modern fixings and detailing where these provide the better technical solution.

Oak Framing

Oak is particularly well suited to structures where the timber itself forms an important part of the finished appearance.

Its strength, durability and distinctive grain make it appropriate for exposed framing, porches, balconies and other architectural features.

Because each project is individually designed, the section sizes, joints and overall proportions can be developed around the property rather than adapted from a standard timber-frame system.

Conservatories and Glazed Structures

Timber conservatories combine structural joinery with windows, doors, glazing and weatherproofing.

This makes them particularly suited to a workshop such as ours, where the complete structure can be considered alongside the individual window and door components.

See our timber conservatories for more information on this type of project.

One-Off Outdoor Joinery

Some projects do not fit neatly into an established product category.

A recent example was a bespoke arched garden gate and timber arbour, manufactured from Iroko using drawbored mortice-and-tenon joinery and installed as a complete entrance structure.

Projects like this allow the design and construction to respond directly to the property rather than being limited by standard sizes or components.

Made for the Individual Project

Bespoke timber structures usually begin with a site, an idea or an architectural drawing rather than a catalogue product.

We can work with homeowners, architects and builders to develop the joinery, determine suitable materials and establish how the individual components will be manufactured and assembled.

Our large South Molton workshop allows substantial sections and more complex structures to be prepared and checked before they are taken to site.
