G S Haydon designs and manufactures bespoke wooden staircases for renovations, extensions, new-build homes and individual properties across Devon.

Every staircase is made to measure in our South Molton workshop, allowing the layout, timber, balustrade, newel posts, handrails and detailing to be designed around the property.

We can manufacture anything from a straightforward timber staircase to more complex winder, curved and feature stairs, with both supply-only and professional fitting available.

Made-to-Measure Stairs for Your Property

A staircase needs to work practically within the available space while also forming an important part of the interior.

Because each staircase is individually designed, we can work around the dimensions and layout of the property rather than relying on standard flights.

Types of Bespoke Staircase

Straight Staircases

A bespoke straight staircase can be simple in layout but still highly individual in its materials and detailing.

Treads, risers, strings, newels, balustrades and handrails can all be tailored to suit the property, from straightforward painted stairs to feature staircases in Oak.

Winder Staircases

Winder staircases use tapered steps to change direction rather than relying entirely on a separate landing.

They can be particularly useful where space is limited, when replacing an existing staircase or as part of a loft conversion or renovation.

Curved and Wreathed Staircases

For projects where the staircase is intended to become a major architectural feature, we also manufacture curved and wreathed staircases.

These can include curved strings, sweeping handrails and elliptical or flowing staircase layouts, all manufactured specifically for the space.

Staircase Design and Building Regulations

A staircase needs to look right, but it also needs to fit the space safely and comply with the relevant Building Regulations.

Important considerations include the rise and going of the steps, staircase pitch, headroom, landings, guarding and balustrade spacing.

We take these practical requirements into account from the beginning of the design process rather than attempting to adapt the staircase after manufacture.

This is particularly important in renovations and older properties where the available opening or floor layout can place tighter restrictions on the design.

Timber, Balustrades and Details

The materials used can completely change the character of a staircase.

Oak remains a popular choice for feature stairs, handrails, treads and newel posts where the timber will remain visible. Pine, painted timber and MDF components can provide practical alternatives where the finished staircase will be painted or carpeted.

Different materials can also be combined. Oak handrails and newel posts, for example, can be used alongside painted strings and spindles.

Balustrades can range from traditional turned timber spindles to simpler contemporary designs or glass.

We will help determine where higher-cost materials will make a visible difference and where a more practical material can achieve the same finished result.

Manufactured in Our South Molton Workshop

Our staircases are manufactured in our own workshop in South Molton, where individual components can be produced and checked before the staircase is delivered to site.

For more complex staircase designs, being able to assemble and check the joinery in the workshop helps identify any issues before installation.

We have been making bespoke joinery in North Devon since 1926 and have worked on staircases ranging from simple replacement flights to complex curved designs.

Supply Only or Professionally Fitted

We can manufacture staircases on a supply-only basis for installation by an experienced builder or carpenter.

Alternatively, our own team can undertake the installation so that manufacture and fitting are handled as one project.

Most of our fitted staircase work is undertaken across North Devon and surrounding parts of Devon, with other projects considered depending on the specification and location.
