Bespoke Straight Wooden Staircases

A straight staircase may have the simplest layout, but there is considerable scope to make it individual to the property.

G S Haydon designs and manufactures made-to-measure straight staircases for renovations, extensions, replacement stair projects and new homes. Each staircase is produced in our South Molton workshop, with the proportions, materials, handrails, newel posts and balustrade designed around the available space and the required appearance.

From practical painted staircases to feature flights in solid Oak, the specification can be kept simple or developed into an important part of the interior.

When Does a Straight Staircase Work Best?

A straight flight runs continuously between two levels without changing direction.

Where the available floor plan allows it, this provides one of the cleanest and most practical staircase arrangements. It can work particularly well where the staircase is intended to create a strong visual line through a hallway or entrance space.

Straight stairs can also provide useful space underneath the flight for cupboards, shelving or other fitted joinery.

Where the staircase needs to change direction within a tighter footprint, a winder staircase may provide a better solution.

Making a Straight Staircase Your Own

Although the basic layout may be simple, almost every visible part of the staircase can be changed.

Depending on the property and design, we can incorporate:

• Oak, Pine and other suitable timbers
• Painted strings and risers
• Solid timber or carpeted treads
• Open or closed risers
• Traditional turned spindles
• Square or contemporary balusters
• Glass balustrades
• Cut or closed strings
• Bespoke newel posts
• Custom handrails and mouldings

Materials can also be combined. For example, Oak treads and handrails can be used alongside painted strings, risers and balustrades to concentrate the natural timber where it will have the greatest visual impact.

Oak Straight Staircases

Oak remains one of the most popular choices for staircases where the timber will form a visible part of the finished interior.

It can be used throughout the staircase or selectively for treads, handrails, newel posts and other prominent components.

Using Oak only where it makes a visual difference can also be a practical way of controlling the cost of a bespoke staircase without compromising the overall appearance.

Painted timber and MDF components can provide an effective alternative for areas that will ultimately be decorated or covered.

Getting the Proportions Right

A staircase must fit comfortably into the building as well as meet the relevant requirements for safe use.

The available floor opening, floor-to-floor height, headroom and length of the staircase all influence the rise, going and pitch of the finished flight.

These dimensions need to be considered early in the project, particularly when replacing an existing staircase or working within an older property where the available space may be restricted.

We can work from site measurements or architectural drawings and develop the staircase specification before manufacture begins.

Made to Measure in North Devon

Each staircase is individually manufactured in our South Molton workshop and assembled or checked as required before it reaches site.

Alongside machine preparation, the staircase components are fitted and hand-finished by our joinery team to create the final details and ensure the individual parts work together correctly.

We can manufacture staircases on a supply-only basis for installation by your builder or carpenter, or provide fitting for suitable projects across North Devon and surrounding areas.
