Custom Made Wood Winder Staircases

Made-to-Measure Winder Staircases

Winder staircases provide a practical way to change direction without using a full landing, making them particularly useful where floor space is limited or an existing staircase layout needs to be reproduced.

G S Haydon designs and manufactures bespoke wooden winder staircases for renovations, loft conversions, replacement stairs and individual building projects.

Each staircase is developed around the available opening and floor-to-floor height, then manufactured in our South Molton workshop before delivery or fitting.

Where Does a Winder Staircase Work Well?

Instead of turning through a square landing, a winder staircase uses specially shaped treads to change direction.

This can make better use of the available footprint and is particularly useful for:

  • Loft conversions
  • Replacement staircases
  • Older properties with restricted layouts
  • Hallways where floor space is limited
  • Staircases that need to turn through 90 or 180 degrees
  • Projects where an existing winder arrangement needs to be reproduced

A winder layout is not automatically the best solution for every property. The available headroom, width, floor opening and position of surrounding walls all need to be considered before deciding on the staircase arrangement.

Where space allows a continuous flight, a straight staircase may provide a simpler alternative.

Designing the Turn Properly

The winder section is the part of the staircase that requires the most careful setting out.

The shape and position of each tread need to provide a comfortable route through the turn while working with the overall rise, going and pitch of the staircase.

Building Regulations also place requirements on staircase dimensions, headroom, guarding and the usable tread depth through the winder.

We take these factors into account during the design stage so that the staircase is developed around both the property and the practical requirements of everyday use.

Timber and Staircase Details

A winder staircase can be designed to suit either a traditional or contemporary interior.

Options can include:

  • Oak, Pine and other suitable timbers
  • Painted strings and risers
  • Oak or carpeted treads
  • Traditional turned spindles
  • Simple square balusters
  • Glass balustrades
  • Bespoke newel posts
  • Solid timber handrails
  • Open or closed risers

Materials can also be combined. Oak handrails, newel posts and treads, for example, can be used alongside painted components to create a strong timber feature without manufacturing the entire staircase from Oak.

You can see the wider range of styles and materials on our bespoke staircase page.

Built and Checked in Our Workshop

One advantage of manufacturing a bespoke staircase in our own workshop is that the individual components can be assembled and checked before they reach the property.

This is particularly useful with a winder staircase, where several components meet around the change in direction and accurate fitting is important.

Our joinery team manufactures each staircase to the agreed dimensions and specification in South Molton before it is supplied for installation or fitted by our team on suitable projects.

For more complex feature stairs where the staircase itself follows a flowing or curved line, see our curved and wreathed staircases.

Planning a Winder Staircase?

If you are replacing an existing staircase or planning a new layout, photographs, architectural drawings and basic dimensions are a useful starting point.

Send us the details of the space and we can discuss whether a winder staircase is suitable and what design options are available.
