Bespoke Furniture and Fitted Interiors in Devon

Furniture made for a particular room should feel as though it belongs there.

G S Haydon designs and manufactures bespoke furniture and fitted interior joinery from our workshop in South Molton, working with homeowners, architects and interior designers across Devon and further afield.

Projects range from fitted wardrobes, cupboards and storage to complete libraries, studies, kitchens and one-off pieces of furniture. Everything is individually designed rather than adapted from a standard furniture range.

Furniture Designed Around the Room

Bespoke furniture becomes particularly valuable when the room itself dictates the design.

Older properties may have uneven walls, alcoves, chimney breasts, sloping ceilings or architectural details that standard furniture does not accommodate particularly well. Other projects simply require a size, layout or finish that cannot be bought off the shelf.

We can design around those constraints and use the available space intelligently.

Our work can include:

  • Fitted cupboards and storage
  • Bedroom furniture and wardrobes
  • Alcove units and shelving
  • Window seats
  • Dining and occasional furniture
  • Media and living-room furniture
  • Dressing rooms
  • Wine storage
  • Room dividers and internal screens
  • One-off pieces designed for a particular space

The aim is not necessarily to fill every available centimetre. Good fitted furniture should improve the way a room works without overwhelming it.

Libraries, Studies and Bookcases

Some of our most detailed interior projects are complete rooms built around books, collections and quiet working spaces.

Our bespoke home libraries and fitted bookcases can incorporate shelving, cupboards, desks, window seats and architectural details designed specifically for the room.

Traditional mouldings can be reproduced for period properties, while simpler lines may be more appropriate in a contemporary interior.

Bespoke Kitchens

Our custom-made kitchens are individually designed around the property, available space and the way the kitchen will actually be used.

Projects can include cabinetry, islands, utility areas, specialist storage and individual furniture pieces, with materials selected according to where they will perform best rather than applying one construction method throughout.

Home and Commercial Offices

We also manufacture bespoke office furniture and interiors, from fitted desks and storage for home studies to reception furniture and larger commercial installations.

Storage, cable management, working heights and the layout of the room can all be considered from the outset so that the joinery works practically as well as visually.

Choosing the Right Materials

Not every part of a piece of furniture needs to be made from the same material.

For painted furniture, Tulipwood is particularly useful for visible frames, doors and moulded components because it machines cleanly and takes a painted finish well.

Stable sheet materials such as high-quality plywood or moisture-resistant MDF can be appropriate for cabinet interiors, backs and other painted components where solid timber would offer little practical advantage.

Where the timber itself is part of the appearance, Oak, Ash, Elm and other suitable hardwoods can be used in solid or veneered form.

We choose materials according to how the furniture will be used, how it will be finished and where spending more on solid timber will make a genuine difference to the finished project.

Made in South Molton

The furniture is manufactured in our own workshop, where we combine modern woodworking machinery with traditional bench joinery and hand finishing.

Depending on the project, the process may involve site surveys, drawings, material samples and detailed discussions about colour, mouldings, handles and other finishes before manufacture begins.

Once complete, furniture can be supplied for installation by others or fitted by our own team where appropriate.

We can also manufacture bespoke internal timber doors where doors and interior joinery need to work together as part of a wider renovation.

Have an Interior Project in Mind?

You do not need to arrive with a finished design.

Photographs of the room, approximate dimensions, architectural drawings or even a clear idea of what is not currently working can provide a useful starting point.
