Bespoke Home Libraries and Fitted Bookcases

A home library is about much more than finding somewhere to put books.

It might be a quiet room to read, a study that needs to work harder or a collection that has grown beyond ordinary shelving. Whatever the starting point, the best libraries feel as though they belong naturally within the architecture of the house.

G S Haydon designs, manufactures and installs bespoke home libraries, fitted bookcases and shelving from our workshop in South Molton. Each project is individually developed around the room, the property and the way you want to use the space.

Designed Around the Room

We do not begin with a standard bookcase and try to make it fit.

Ceiling height, fireplaces, windows, skirting boards, cornices, alcoves and existing architectural details all influence the design. So does the collection itself: the size of the books, objects to be displayed and whether closed storage, a desk or seating needs to be incorporated.

In a period property, traditional mouldings and carefully proportioned shelving may be appropriate. In another room, simpler lines and fewer details can produce a better result.

Sometimes the most important design decision is knowing where the furniture should stop.

Fitted Bookcases and Library Shelving

A complete library can incorporate far more than rows of shelves.

Depending on the room, the design might include:

  • Adjustable library shelving
  • Floor-to-ceiling fitted bookcases
  • Base cupboards and concealed storage
  • Alcove bookcases
  • Window seats
  • Display areas
  • Integrated desks
  • Reading areas
  • Traditional cornices and plinths
  • Bespoke mouldings to complement existing joinery

Shelves can be proportioned around a particular collection, with additional or adjustable shelving included so the library can change over time.

Where the room will also be used for regular home working, our bespoke office interiors provide further ideas for desks, storage and fitted workspace.

Traditional or Contemporary

Not every home library needs to look like a traditional country-house library.

We have produced substantial Oak bookcases as well as painted fitted furniture designed to sit quietly within period interiors.

The architecture of the room should determine the character of the joinery rather than the other way around.

Our recent Victorian home library project on the Devon coast is a good example. The fitted bookcases were designed around the room's original skirting, cornice and frieze rail, with carefully controlled proportions so that the new joinery did not overwhelm the existing architecture.

Choosing Materials

The right material depends on where it is being used and how the finished library will look.

For painted joinery, we often use Tulipwood for visible frames, mouldings and detailed components. It machines cleanly, produces crisp profiles and takes a painted finish particularly well.

Oak and other hardwoods can be used where the natural timber is intended to remain visible.

For concealed cabinet backs and some painted internal components, stable materials such as moisture-resistant MDF can sometimes be a better technical choice than solid timber.

We will explain why particular materials are being recommended rather than simply specifying the most expensive option throughout.

From First Ideas to Installation

A project can begin with architectural drawings, photographs of the room or simply a conversation about what you would like it to become.

Depending on the scale and complexity, the design process may include site measurements, drawings, material and colour discussions and full-size mock-ups of important details.

The joinery is then manufactured in our South Molton workshop.

For painted libraries, components can be spray finished before installation where this gives the best result. Other projects may benefit from final decoration after fitting.

Installation can also be undertaken by our own team.

How Much Does a Bespoke Home Library Cost?

The price depends on the size of the room, amount of cabinetry, materials, mouldings, finish and complexity of the installation.

As an approximate guide:

  • Small fitted bookcases may start from around £2,000–£3,000
  • Larger painted bookcase walls are commonly around £5,000–£10,000
  • Complete room libraries with cupboards, detailed mouldings and specialist finishes can exceed £15,000

These figures are intended to provide a realistic starting point rather than a quotation. Once we understand the room and what you would like to achieve, we can advise on where the budget will make the greatest difference.
