Exterior Wood Doors

Bespoke Timber Front Doors Made in Devon

G S Haydon designs and manufactures bespoke timber front and entrance doors for period properties, listed buildings, renovations and individual homes across Devon.

Every door is made to measure in our South Molton workshop, allowing the proportions, timber, glazing, ironmongery and finish to be chosen specifically for the property.

We can reproduce the character of an existing entrance, create a new design for a renovation or work from drawings supplied by an architect or designer.

Our entrance doors are available supply only or with surveying and professional installation.

Made-to-Measure Entrance Doors

A front door has a major influence on the appearance of a property, particularly where the entrance forms an important architectural feature.

Bespoke manufacture allows us to work around unusual openings and create a door that sits naturally within the building rather than adapting a standard-sized product.

Design options can include:

  • Solid or partially glazed doors
  • Raised and fielded panels
  • Traditional or contemporary mouldings
  • Sidelights and glazed entrance screens
  • Fanlights
  • Obscure and decorative glazing
  • Traditional or modern ironmongery
  • Painted, stained or natural timber finishes

Our bespoke hardwood front door project near Crediton shows how traditional detailing, modern weather protection and carefully selected ironmongery can be combined in a made-to-measure entrance.

Front Doors for Period and Listed Properties

Period homes often have door openings, mouldings and proportions that are difficult to reproduce using standard products.

Where an existing door needs replacing, we can match important details from the original joinery or develop a sympathetic alternative that complements the building.

For listed properties, the extent of replacement, design, glazing and materials may be influenced by listed building consent. Our experience includes manufacturing traditional external doors for historic properties and working alongside homeowners, architects and conservation professionals.

The timber windows and doors we made for a traditional Exmoor cottage included a new entrance door designed to improve comfort and security while remaining appropriate to the character of the property.

Where an existing door or frame remains repairable, our joinery repair and refurbishment service may provide an alternative to complete replacement.

Oak, Accoya and Hardwood Entrance Doors

The best timber depends on the appearance, finish, exposure and design of the door.

Oak is often chosen where the natural grain and colour of the timber are an important part of the finished appearance.

Accoya is particularly well suited to painted external doors because of its dimensional stability and resistance to decay. This can be especially valuable for entrance doors exposed to changing weather conditions.

Suitable durable hardwoods can also provide an excellent option for painted or stained doors.

Our guide to Accoya for timber doors and windows explains where we believe its additional cost is justified.

Glazing, Security and Ironmongery

Entrance doors can incorporate anything from a small glazed panel to large areas of glass or complete glazed side screens.

Depending on the design and property, options can include double glazing, heritage glazing, obscure glass and decorative glass.

Security can be incorporated through five-lever locks, multipoint locking systems and suitable door hardware.

Ironmongery also has a significant effect on appearance. Traditional wrought iron or brass may suit a period property, while stainless steel and simpler fittings can work well on contemporary doors.

Factory Finished in South Molton

We generally recommend factory finishing for external timber doors.

Preparing and coating the door in our workshop allows the timber to receive its paint or stain system under controlled conditions before being exposed to the weather.

Doors can be finished in a wide range of colours, including different internal and external colours where required.

Glazing and much of the ironmongery can also be fitted before the door leaves the workshop.

Supply Only or Professionally Installed

We manufacture entrance doors on a supply-only basis for installation by your own builder or contractor.

For projects within our installation area, we can also survey the opening, manufacture and finish the door and complete the installation.

Our main bespoke timber doors page provides further information on the different external door styles we manufacture and indicative pricing for bespoke doors.
