A Traditional Hardwood Front Door Designed to Suit the Property
We recently completed the manufacture and installation of this bespoke hardwood front door for a detached stone-built country home near Crediton in Mid Devon.
The homeowners were looking for a replacement door that felt more appropriate to the character of the property. Whilst the existing door was still serviceable, it lacked the traditional appearance and craftsmanship they wanted for the entrance to their home.
As with all of our bespoke joinery projects, the door was designed specifically for the opening and tailored to suit both the property and the client's preferences.
Balancing Light, Privacy and Character
One of the features that makes this door particularly distinctive is the proportion of the design.
The upper section incorporates six glazed panes, allowing natural light into the entrance area whilst maintaining the traditional appearance of a timber cottage-style door.
Below, the insulated tongue and groove panel section is slightly taller than many of the doors we commonly manufacture. This subtle adjustment helped create a greater sense of privacy while maintaining a balanced appearance that complements the surrounding stonework.
Small details such as these can make a significant difference when designing a bespoke entrance door.
Manufactured to Measure
Every dimension of this door was individually made to suit the existing opening.
Constructed from durable hardwood, the door was finished with a spray-applied Morrells stain system to enhance the natural beauty of the timber while providing long-term protection from the weather.
The glazing incorporates energy-efficient toughened double glazed units with a low-emissivity coating to improve thermal performance without compromising the traditional appearance of the design.
The door was also fitted with quality ironmongery and a security-rated 5 lever sash lock, providing both security and durability for everyday use.
Built for the British Weather
Whilst appearance is important, performance is equally critical.
The door incorporates our weather-resistant threshold system along with modern weather seals designed to help reduce draughts and improve comfort throughout the year.
By combining traditional joinery techniques with modern materials and weather protection systems, we are able to create doors that offer timeless character alongside practical everyday performance.
Installation in Mid Devon
We manufactured and installed two bespoke doors for this property.
Although we normally allow a full day for the installation of a single external door, careful preparation and a straightforward installation allowed both doors to be fitted within a single day.
From initial consultation through to manufacture and installation, most bespoke door projects take approximately 8–12 weeks depending on design complexity and current workshop workload.
Throughout the process, the homeowners were able to work directly with our team, discussing the details on site and knowing that the same local company would manage the project from start to finish.
The Finished Result
The completed door provides a welcoming entrance that feels entirely at home within the character of the property.
Its combination of traditional styling, durable hardwood construction, modern weather protection and quality craftsmanship creates a secure and attractive entrance that should serve the property for many years to come.
