Solid Wood Sash Windows Made in Devon

Bespoke Timber Sash Windows in Devon

G S Haydon manufactures bespoke timber sliding sash windows for period homes, listed buildings, conservation projects and renovations across Devon.

Every sash window is made to measure in our South Molton workshop. We can reproduce the proportions and detailing of existing windows or manufacture new sash windows to suit an architect's specification.

Traditional construction can be combined with modern draught sealing, carefully selected glazing and factory-applied finishes to improve performance without losing the character that makes a sash window distinctive.

We offer both supply-only windows and a survey, manufacture and installation service.

Traditional Sash Windows Made to Suit Your Property

Original sash windows often contain subtle details that have a significant effect on the appearance of the building.

When producing replacement windows, we can replicate features such as:

  • Sash and frame proportions
  • Traditional glazing bars
  • Ovolo and other moulded details
  • Sash horns
  • Panelled reveals
  • Traditional ironmongery
  • Existing opening arrangements

For traditional box sash windows, we favour the proven weight-and-pulley system where appropriate. Properly balanced sash weights provide smooth operation and allow the mechanism to be maintained and repaired in the future.

Our traditional box sash window project in North Devon shows how this approach can be combined with modern glazing in a period property.

Repair, Restore or Replace Your Sash Windows?

Not every old sash window needs replacing.

Timber lends itself particularly well to repair, and many problems can be addressed without removing the complete window. Depending on its condition, work can include:

  • Repairing rotten or damaged timber
  • Replacing sash cords
  • Easing sticking sashes
  • Draught proofing
  • Replacing damaged glazing
  • Repairing individual sashes
  • Improving operation and ironmongery

Our guide to common sash window problems explains some of the faults we regularly encounter and when repair may be practical.

Where more extensive work is required, our timber window repair and refurbishment service can help retain as much of the existing joinery as reasonably possible.

If deterioration is too extensive, or existing windows are inappropriate for the property, we can manufacture replacements to reproduce the important original details.

Sash Windows for Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas

Sash windows are a defining feature of many Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian properties, so replacement needs to be considered carefully where architectural character is important.

For listed buildings, the design, glazing and extent of replacement will depend on the individual property and any consent requirements. Repair of historic joinery may be preferred where it remains practical.

Where replacement is appropriate, we can provide detailed bespoke joinery rather than relying on standard window sizes or applied decorative features.

Our guide to replacing windows in conservation areas provides further information on some of the considerations involved.

Timber and Glazing Options

Our sash windows can be manufactured in Accoya or suitable hardwoods, depending on the required appearance, exposure, finish and budget.

Glazing can include:

  • Traditional single glazing
  • Slim heritage double glazing
  • Modern double-glazed units
  • Specialist and decorative glass where required

For period properties, slim heritage double glazing can allow finer glazing bars and more traditional sightlines to be retained while improving thermal performance.

The most suitable specification will depend on the property, the existing windows and any planning or listed-building requirements.

Factory Finished and Professionally Installed

New sash windows can be fully painted or stained in our workshop before delivery. Factory finishing allows the timber and glazing system to be prepared under controlled conditions and provides protection to areas that are difficult to reach once the window has been installed.

We offer both supply-only and supply-and-install services.

Most of our installed projects are across North Devon and surrounding areas, including South Molton, Barnstaple, Braunton, Bideford, Tiverton and Exmoor. Projects further afield can also be discussed, particularly where windows are required on a supply-only basis.
