Solid Front Doors - Made In Devon

Custom made oak front door

Although I can understand people choosing alternative materials for windows, I think there remains—and will always remain—a very strong reason to consider a custom-made external timber door. Especially an entrance door.

Whilst the cost may be prohibitive in some situations, I hope to share some of the benefits of having a unique door commissioned just for you.

I believe that solid wood allows the greatest variation of design possible when compared to other materials. Solid wood can be worked in unique ways that other materials can't, whilst still retaining a high degree of strength and stability. Think fine glazing bars, raised and fielded panels, complex mouldings, or clean contemporary lines—solid wood meets those challenges.

I don't think anything beats solid wood in terms of appearance. Whether painted or finished with a translucent coating to showcase a particular species, wood really sets the tone.

One of the most important—and often overlooked—aspects of an entrance door is the tactile experience. Warm, solid, reassuring, and strong is something you experience with a solid wood door. I personally don't experience those things with other materials. You feel the weight of a solid timber door as you open and close it—it’s a reassuring experience.

But can you expect a high degree of security with a timber door? You can indeed. The multipoint locking systems that many of you may be familiar with can be used in timber doors in many different variations. Traditional mortice locks and deadlocks can be used too. Then there's the inherent and robust strength of timber, which provides an ideal structure to fix a wide variety of locks within.

With the correct specification, solid wood doors are durable. Cheaper timbers like redwood, in our experience, should be avoided—so too should cheap mass-produced doors, which often have a thin veneer over a wooden core. But durable solid timber, properly coated and maintained, will offer something to enjoy for decades.

Are solid wood doors energy efficient? Absolutely. We have to provide an overall U-value (also known as thermal transmittance) that is equal to or better than the current building regulations.

Even though—shock horror—my late 1960s home has PVC windows, it will be treated to a solid feature door when the time is right.
