Why Homeowners Across North and Mid Devon Choose Bespoke Timber Windows and Doors
In our experience, the number one reason homeowners choose bespoke timber windows and doors is surprisingly simple: they want something that genuinely suits their home.
For me, choosing something that is right for a property is incredibly important. That doesn't mean homeowners are constrained to one particular style. Rather, it means understanding the character of a building and making choices that complement it.
A Victorian terrace, for example, often looks most comfortable with traditional sash windows featuring slender glazing bars. A Devon cottage may suit smaller casement windows with solid glazing bars, sympathetic mouldings and proportions that reflect the age of the property. When the details are right, a home simply feels comfortable in its own skin.
The same principle applies to doors. A well-designed timber door can transform the appearance of a property. It becomes the focal point of the entrance and creates a sense of welcome. This is often where homeowners choose to be a little more expressive, using colour, timber choice and design details to create something distinctive while still remaining sympathetic to the house.
Meeting the People Making Your Joinery
Many of our clients like the reassurance of knowing exactly who is making their windows and doors.
If you live in Devon, you can visit our workshop, see the materials we use and meet the people responsible for manufacturing your joinery. In an age of polished websites and carefully staged lifestyle photography, there is something reassuring about seeing real craftsmen working in a real workshop.
We believe this connection matters. After all, these windows and doors will become part of your home for many years to come.
Making the Most Appropriate Choice
One of the advantages of bespoke joinery is that solutions can be tailored to the individual property rather than selected from a catalogue.
We are not tied to a particular timber supplier or paint manufacturer, nor do we have sales targets attached to specific products.
For example, we believe Accoya is one of the best materials currently available for external joinery. However, that does not automatically mean it is the right choice for every project. If a property is particularly sheltered, using Accoya may offer little practical benefit compared with a more economical alternative. Equally, a highly exposed coastal property may justify the additional investment.
The same approach applies to glazing. Triple glazing often sounds attractive in theory, but for many homes it adds significant cost, increases section sizes and delivers only modest improvements in overall performance.
Our role is to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the available options and help you arrive at the choice that best suits your home, budget and expectations.
A Complete Service
We prefer to undertake almost every stage of a project ourselves.
Surveying, manufacturing, painting, glazing and installation are all carried out as part of our service, with installations completed to CERTASS standards.
While it is sometimes possible to save money by organising separate trades yourself, we have occasionally been approached by homeowners with part-completed projects that never quite reached the finish line. Having a single point of responsibility helps ensure projects are completed to the standard our clients expect.
Here for the Long Term
GS Haydon & Son has been trading in North Devon since 1926.
We have no ambition to become a national brand. Our focus is on working with homeowners across North and Mid Devon who value quality craftsmanship and personal service.
Many of our clients appreciate knowing that we are a local company with deep roots in the area and that we intend to be here for many years to come. If a customer needs advice, maintenance or assistance in the future, they know where to find us.
Honest Advice Matters
One survey from many years ago has always stayed with me.
A homeowner had contacted us regarding a pair of original box sash windows. At first glance, it looked like a straightforward replacement project.
As I often do, I asked why they wanted to replace them.
Were they cold? No.
Were they noisy? No.
Were they suffering from condensation? No.
The answer was simply that they were old and didn't slide particularly well.
After discussing the windows in more detail, we concluded that they were largely sound and that a day spent repairing and servicing them would likely resolve the issues.
The homeowner chose that route.
Not only did they save a considerable amount of money, but they also retained their original windows and the character that came with them. In fact, they seemed to enjoy their home more afterwards because they understood the value of what they already had.
For us, that was the right outcome.
More Than Just Windows and Doors
Being a joiner is supposed to be enjoyable.
It is about making things that people genuinely want and that add value to their homes and everyday lives. We enjoy working with homeowners who share that perspective and who appreciate the difference that thoughtful design, quality materials and skilled craftsmanship can make.
That, more than anything else, is why many homeowners across North and Mid Devon choose bespoke timber windows and doors.
